Growing Into Her Own Sound
Before she was Buku Love, she was a young girl in fourth grade hoping to play the drums. Instead, she was handed a trumpet. “That was just what it was,” she said with a laugh. But that early experience in band planted a creative seed. Over time, music class turned into poetry, poetry evolved into songwriting, and eventually she stepped into her full artistry. “It pushed me into more of an independent feel when it comes to my creation.”
She credits the energy of the 90s for shaping her sound. “You will hear that I’m more from the ’90s,” she said, naming Left Eye, Foxy Brown, Lauryn Hill, Eve, and Lil’ Kim among her influences. But she’s just as inspired by the women carving space in music today. “I really do love to say I’m pretty much influenced by every single female artist that’s out here because we’re all standing up for something that’s beautiful.”
Creating From Real Life
Buku’s process is rooted in honesty. “Most of the time when I’m creating something, I try to stay true to myself.” Her music is a mirror of her emotions and experiences, shaped by the highs and lows of everyday life. “We all go through our daily lives every single day. We got ups, we have downs. I think it’s that moment that we really hone in on ourselves... we really are the creation to all of this.”
For her, music means giving people something to feel. “Sometimes they don’t want to hear it in a conversation. Sometimes they just want to bop to it. Sometimes they want to rock their head or just have something that they can really resonate with.”
An Introduction to Buku Love
Right now, Buku is putting the finishing touches on her upcoming EP. It’s more than a project. It’s a full introduction to who she is as an artist and a person. “One thing I’m very keen about is just how I present myself and also how you guys basically see that I’m putting my all into this,” she said.
Though she admits it’s easy to nitpick and chase perfection, she’s learning to embrace the messiness. “That’s the big thing. Nothing’s perfect. Everything’s worth it.”
Leaving a Lasting Impression
Buku hopes that when people hear her name, they remember her authenticity. “I want to know that when people say my name or when they even mention me, they’re like, ‘Oh yeah. She’s one of those.’” She wants her music to leave a real impact.
