Jojo VYBZ: Building Community One Beat at a Time

From family parties to gatherings, Jojo VYBZ’s journey as a DJ started with the support of her family. Growing up immersed in the rhythms of Caribbean music, R&B, hip-hop, and more, Jojo saw the power of music. With her first turntable, she was shy and grieving the passing of her grandmother. Self-taught, Jojo found her momentum and her confidence in DJing. A transforming moment, such as her grieving, was the last puzzle to encourage her to start her journey.

When asked about her favorite events to cover, Jojo lights up, talking about the Caribbean Carnival. Thousands of people dancing, laughing, and moving together. It’s the kind of energy Jojo VYBZ thrives in. “Fusing different music, seeing myself there made me realize, oh, that's one of my favorite events to play,” she says.

In Jojo's atmosphere, everyone is welcome; that is why she doesn't have a favorite genre. “I feel like all music is good music,” she says. Her mission is simple: ensure everyone has a good time and is part of the vibe.

I want to make people dance and feel like they’re being welcomed and celebrated.

There is a method to curate her sets. Jojo takes time to research the crowd, understand the event’s energy, and build a setlist. There are a lot of moving pieces to DJing. “Talking to my managers, praying to God that everything will work out, and just testing music and practicing beforehand,” she shares.

Like any creative path, DJing also comes with its challenges. She’s learned to stay grounded through setbacks, trusting that growth comes from the process, not perfection. Jojo’s advice for other creatives is don’t rush on anything. “Sometimes, making things imperfect helps you develop and see where you are.”

At the heart of it all, Jojo’s work is rooted in people and a promise to her grandmother to chase her dreams. “The greatest impact is definitely people and my grandmother,” she shares. Just remembering how much she wants me to make it as a woman and as a person in life.”
